Tips for a healthier Halloween!

With Halloween approaching, I thought about how I used to fear the classroom and neighborhood celebrations, the candy, the artificial colors, ALL the junk food! It felt like we were the only ones trying to celebrate holidays without sugar. I'm going to share some tips that helped us and I can promise you that we all had great Halloweens without all the junk.

  • If your child is having a classroom holiday party, try to get involved. I became a room parent and we only had healthy food options, played games and did crafts, and not ONE kid complained or missed the candy. I did hear whispers from some of the other parents complaining, but all the kids had a great time!

  • My girls loved the "switch witch". They went trick-or-treating, put their candy out overnight for the witch to take, and then would wake up to a gift in it's place. As they got older, they asked for cash from the witch, and eventually started donating the candy.

  • We used to hand out toys instead of candy that I would buy online in bulk. I would usually get them from Oriental Trading Co. but I found many options at Michaels, Target and Amazon. Michaels also had a silicone brain mold that I thought would be fun to use with sugar free cranberry jello or my healthy marshmallow recipe. That would be fun to make with your child!

  • My girls loved roasting pumpkin seeds with coconut oil and sea salt, baking apples, and having hot chocolate-you could use some of those marshmallows! We liked Vital Proteins Hot Cocoa, which is sweetened with monk fruit extract.

  • Finish off the evening with some fermented foods, like coconut kefir!

Some of the healthier treat options we like that are all individually wrapped. Good for classroom parties or trick-or-treating. The fruit rolls and smart sweets were the cheapest option per item.

Lesser Evil organic popcorn.

Smart Sweets

Skinny Dipped peanut butter cups (keep in mind there are nuts)

Bear Fruit Rolls

Sensible Portions veggie chips ghosts and bats chips

Hu chocolate bites

Some of the toys I found at Michaels. Also good for handing out for trick-or-treating or classroom parties.

Let's try to be the change makers and get rid of all the junk! I hope you have a happy, healthy Halloween!
